Exercise 1: Measurements of Length
Length is the distance between two points, and the unit of linear measurement is the meter (m). A meter is 39.37 inches. A meter contains 100 centimeters and 1000 millimeters. A kilometer (km) contains 1000 meters, which is equal to 0.6 miles. Cells are typically microscopic and usually less than 1 mm in length. Micrometers (µm) are used to measure cells. One thousand micrometers equal 1 millimeter. A nanometer (nm) is one-thousandth of a micrometer, which means that 1000 nm equal 1 µm.
PROCEDURE
- On a one-meter stick, identify the centimeter markings. They are numbered from 1 to 100. Measure the length of your hand, from wrist to the tip of your middle finger in centimeters. __________.
- The smallest unit of measure on the meter stick is millimeter (mm). There are 10 mm in 1 centimeter (cm). How many mm are in 5 cm? _________.
- The prefix "deci" means one-tenth (1/10 or 0.1). Ten centimeters are equal to 1 decimeter (dm). How many dm are there on a one-meter ruler? ____________
- Use the small plastic ruler to measure smaller objects. If a ruler has 15 cm, how many mm does that equal? _____________.
