FULL CATALOG DESCRIPTION:
Focuses on the study of British literature from the Romantic Period to present day. Examines the nature of British culture as expressed through a variety of literary genres and historical periods. Analysis via various literary critical approaches. Computer use required for online sections. Prerequisite: ENG 101.
COURSE OBJECTIVES (STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES):
Upon successful completion of the course, as documented by
papers, class discussions, and exams, students will be able to:
1. *Demonstrate knowledge of the historical, social, and intellectual context
of literary works and their appropriate literary periods;
2. Complete a 1200-1600 word research paper demonstrating the ability to apply
one literary critical method to a piece of literature
from the
Romantic period to present day as evidence of the student's appreciation for
British literature and its traditions;
3. List four main British literary periods after the Neoclassical period;
4. Identify in writing a minimum of five influential writers of each period;
5. Analyze in writing a minimum of three characteristics and two to three
literary themes (connected to social and historical context)
for each
literary period;
6. Explain in writing how women and minorities were viewed in each literary
period and how they in turn viewed themselves.
* This course objective has been identified as a student learning outcome that

Plan. All faculty teaching this course must collect
the required data (see Assessing Student Learning Outcomes form) and submit the
required analysis and documentation at the conclusion of the semester to the
Office of Assessment and Special Projects.

A student’s final grade is determined on the basis of successful completion of all assigned essays, readings, exams, quizzes, journal writing, attendance, or participation.
