FULL CATALOG DESCRIPTION:
Focuses on the study of British literature from the Middle Ages to the Restoration. Examines the development of British culture as expressed through a variety of literary genres from the three major historical periods. Analysis via various literary critical approaches. Computer use required for online sections. Prerequisite: ENG 101.
COURSE OBJECTIVES (STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES):
Upon successful completion of the course, as documented by
papers, class discussions, and exams, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of the historical, social, and intellectual context of
literary works and their appropriate literary periods;
2. *Complete a 1200-1600 word research paper demonstrating the ability to apply
one literary critical method to a piece of literature
from one
of the three periods under study as evidence of the student's appreciation for
British literature and its traditions;
3. List three main British literary periods previous to the Romantics;
4. Identify in writing a minimum of five influential writers of each period;
5. Analyze in writing a minimum of three characteristics and two to three
literary themes (connected to social and historical context) for each literary
period.
